Meet Our Newest Rockstar: Ashley McIntyre

Meet Our Newest Rockstar: Ashley McIntyre

The BC/DC Ideas team is growing! Get to know the newest addition, Ashley McIntyre. Ashley is our newest Content & Media Manager. We love her in a completely professional way, and you will too!

IMG_0346Hi! My name is Ashley.

I’ve loved stories and reading since childhood, so when it came time to choose a major, journalism seemed like such a natural fit. I was really into sports (soccer and baseball especially), so I spent most of my college career preparing myself to become a sports writer. I was even the first female sports editor at Berry College’s student newspaper!

After I graduated, I got a job as a copywriter at a large specialty sporting goods retailer and worked in the marketing department for about three years. I also got to use my love for fashion and clothing while I worked there, and styled a few national television commercials. I took this interest in fashion to a job at a high-end department store for a few months, but I really missed writing and communications work.

When the position at BC/DC Ideas opened up, I applied immediately. I wanted to join the BC/DC Ideas crew because they seem super passionate about their work, and doing it well. I’m super excited to be here!

Why do you love communications?

I think my love of communications comes from my love of storytelling. From writing to fashion, videos to graphic design, there are just so many different and wonderful ways to send messages from one human to another. And I love that.

What is your nonprofit passion point?

I’m relatively new to the nonprofit world so I’m still exploring what I’m most passionate about. I do, however, love dogs, the arts and anything that helps women feel empowered.

Why are you excited to join the BC/DC Ideas team?

I’m super excited to be surrounded by hardworking, creative people who want to use their talents make the world a better place. I feel like I have a lot to learn from this team and I’m super pumped about that.

Where would people most likely find you on a Saturday afternoon?

I’m probably frantically rushing to yoga class. In Bikram yoga, most studios lock the door once class has started so students can become and stay focused and calm throughout the class; tardiness isn’t an option. If I’m not at yoga, I’m cruising the clearance racks at the mall (I LOVE a good sale) or watching Seinfeld reruns with my boyfriend and my dog.

Which rockstar/musician/band would you most like to be and why?

Janelle Monae, hands down. She’s strong, feminine, unapologetic, incredibly talented and so creative. I went to her show in Raleigh a couple of years ago and just stood there crying for the first ten minutes. I was so happy and didn’t know what else to do with my feelings, so I just wept. And if I can’t be Janelle, I want to join her Wondaland Crew because that group of artists is incredible. Someone would have to teach me to sing though.

What is your favorite color?

My favorite color is purple, although I never actually wear it.

What is the one office supply you can not live without?

Nice pens. If I hit a creative wall or am trying to troubleshoot a problem in my head, I need to do some random freewriting on paper to get myself “unstuck”. But this free-writing exercise needs to happen with a nice pen, or else its superpowers seem to be limited.

Things that make him happy: Hanging out at the park with family, toddler-speak, hitting the focus pull, and good coffee.

Things that make her happy: A glass of champagne to celebrate big wins, Basecamp, living in the South, seeing the world, and a well-formatted spreadsheet.
